What all the fans have been craving for is finally here. They stopped circling in F1 and began racing for real. The recipe that nobody was able to discover for a long time, is quite simple. A limited number of tire sets for a race and exactly timed durability press the drivers to be tactical and to save the tires pretty scrupulously. The difference between a fresh and a worn tire gives several seconds per lap, and so the different stints make all the drivers race constantly. The tires war had its influence already on the qualification, when all drivers tried to reach their best times in the individual parts with the minimum of laps. Not always they were successful and that’s why for example Webber remained outside the gate as soon as the first part. In the second one it was Petrov to pull a trick out of his hat. With his Renault deployed always close to the end of the measured time and having taken his fast lap, left the car on the track with an alleged trouble. The red flag that interrupted the rest of the qualification with fatal impact on the others including his team mate Heidfeld. Could this be an application of the Avary ruse which is commonly used by his fellow tribesmen? The remaining ten fought for the pole position with the traditional results. Vettel first, ahead of two McLarens and Rosberg, then both Ferraris before both Torro Rosso cars, with only Di Resta wedged in between them.
Vettel didn’t do good at the start as both McLarens went in front of him, Schumacher, on the contrary, gained a few positions. Button made a mistake before the first pit stop as he headed for the Red Bull’s garage and lost his position. Vettel gained an advantage over Hamilton and it appeared that all would go in the usual way. Four laps to the finish, however, the leader’s tires collapsed and opened the way for Hamilton to win. To make the surprise complete Webber, starting from the 17th place, with fresher tire set caught up with the third Button and effortlessly swept him off the podium. Rosberg with not so stable Mercedes won so far best standings for his team, coming the fifth before both Ferraris which just prolonged their misery. Also Schumacher reached for the points before Kobayashi’s Sauber and Petrov.
The Chinese GP might be summarized by saying that it has been one of the best races in the modern history of F1. From the twenty four cars at the start almost all finished, except for Alguersuari whose loose wheel came off. The second league's loss was only two laps and the Fernandez's Lotuses could keep up with the centre of the pack. A major positive was the fact that the standings kept changing throughout the race. Finally, even Mr Ecclestone had to be happy as the tire makers are helping his business a lot.
